How to Handle Rejection Gracefully
Let's go back to a moment in time -- a moment when you were so excited to start a new job, but a few days after the interview, you received an email saying you didn't get the position. Or maybe there was a moment when you applied to your top choice college and you received a letter saying you didn't get in. You may have even experienced a time when the man that you were finally falling for was falling for somebody else. Regardless of what your story may be, the comment element in all of these situations is rejection.
We've all been through periods of rejection, a time when we were denied, thrown away, or casted out. The worst part is that oftentimes when we are being denied, another person is somewhere else being accepted. Take a moment to reflect.
It's okay to take some time to reflect on what just happened. Give yourself the time and space to process your thoughts and emotions. Reflecting on these thoughts and emotions allows you to handle rejection in a healthy way and analyze the situation for what it is. Don't just use this time as a pity party. Use it as an opportunity to learn from the situation and grow.
Vent.
It's unhealthy to hold everything in. One of the best ways to cope is to vent. Pray and cast your cares on the Lord while seeking the Holy Spirit for wisdom. Find an objective friend or family member that you can disclose to and seek their support. The worst way you can handle rejection is by going through it silently and alone.
Get feedback.
It's okay to seek closure. Don't be afraid to ask questions or inquire about feedback. If you were rejected for a career position, this will help you respectfully obtain insight so that you can gain professional development and personal improvement. The constructive criticism you receive can help to avoid rejection again.
Realize there's room for everyone to win.
I know it can be tough to swallow when someone else was chosen for a position or an opportunity instead of you. Avoid jealously and comparison by learning how to truly be happy for and celebrate others. The Bible says that there's a time and season for everything, and that everything is made beautiful in its time. (Ecclesiastes 3). That means that there's room for everyone to get a piece of the pie. Trust that your time and season is on the way.
Move on.
There's no need to cry over spilled milk. Stop dwelling in the past. It's okay to be disappointed and discouraged as long as you don't stay there. You must learn how to let go and let God. The sooner you move on, the sooner you can take advantage of the blessings that God has given you in this current season.
Dealing with rejection can be hard, but it is possible to keep your dignity and handle it gracefully. If you are experiencing rejection, realize that every no is one step closer to a yes. Rejection is just the perfect reminder that God has something that's bigger and better on the way.
