Redesigning Your Rhythms & Routines
Almost every week in college, my best friend would ask me to help her create her weekly routine and schedule. Why? Because routines matter. Routines not only give you structure; they create discipline by giving you a framework to carve out time to accomplish your goals and pursue what matters most to you. Having a routine allows you to design your days instead of letting them dictate you.
As the summer comes to the end and you dive back into the swing of things, you must create routines that turn your life purpose, goals, and habits into reality. This practice will help you focus on your priorities and carry out God’s plan for your life. Here are five routines that you can redesign to make the rest of the year count.
Quiet Time
I always notice the difference in my day when I start it off in the Word. Quieting my soul before the Lord right at the beginning of my day helps put my anxieties at ease, as I partner with God and surrender my plan for His. It relieves me of my burdens because I’m reminded that only His strength and grace will get me through my day. Before you do anything else, take a few moments to spend time with your Creator. Thank Him for giving you fresh breath and a new day to walk in purpose. Ask for the wisdom, clarity, and strategy to focus on His priorities for you for the day. And rely on His grace and strength to get you through.
Morning/Night
Whether you are an early bird or a night owl, it’s so important to implement a morning and night routine. Research has proven that those who wake up early tend to be more proactive and productive. According to the Harvard Business Review, the majority of morning people agree with the statements that identified them as a self-starter such as, “I spend time identifying long-range goals for myself,” and “I feel in charge of making things happen.” But just because you’re a morning person, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have a night routine as well. Not only will a night routine aid you to have a more restful sleep, but it will also help you wind down, relieve anxiety, and plan for the next day. Think about how you can tailor your morning and night routine to work for you.
Weekly Planning
Avoid that sense of frantic and aimless sailing by sitting down to purposefully plan out your week. Planning creates peace and order. Start by going into your calendar and penciling in work, meetings, and appointments. Then create a master list of your purposeful priorities and work them into your rhythms and routines. This creates a sense of peace because instead of making excuses, you created the time, space, and a plan to do what matters most to you, and most importantly take action.
Personal Development
Have you made it a priority and a practice to invest in your personal growth and development? Here at Life Designer University, we believe that you should always be learning and growing yourself to the next level. Every week set aside time to pour into your learning and growth. Going through a spiritual challenge? During your quiet time focus on Scriptures and Bible Studies that lead to your spiritual growth. Wanting to acquire a skill? Carve out some time in your calendar to take a class. Wanting to learn new ways of thinking that will elevate your success? Set aside some time every night to read a book that will empower you to grow and renew your mind.
Rest
Remember, rest refreshes and restores you to do all the things that God is calling you too and it’s a commandment, not a suggestion. Make sure you that rest is a part of your weekly routine. Take one day a week to recognize the Sabbath, where you engage in physical and spiritual rest. Take it a step further and think about how you can incorporate rest into your daily routine. Light a candle. Drink some soothing and calming tea. Take a bath. Practice gratitude as you journal and reflect on your day. There are some many restful and restorative ways to refuel your soul. Do whatever feels right to you. Soul care matters.
Don’t underestimate the power and effectiveness of having solid routines. Good routines will help you go from having idealized goals to executed plans. Take some time to redesign yours so you can carry out your God-given purpose and goals.
